From
the outskirts of pisa, the Viale D'Annunzio - 11 km avenue
skirting the south bank of the Arno nameda after the great
Italian poet who regularly visited these places - leads to
Marina di Pisa, a seaside resort built at the mouth of the
river in the second half on the 19th century.
To the north,
the Apuan Alps, the sandy beaches and pinewoods of the San
Rossore estate form a charming backdrop.
The many buildings
in the Liberty style are part of an urban fabric characterized
by squares giving directly on to the sea and a large pinewood
at the back. The shore offers not only small sandy beaches
protected by imposing breakwaters but also a wider stretch
of beach with several bathing establishments.
Boats can find
assistance in the numerous mooring places along the final
stretch of the Arno.Accomodations and leisure facilities
include hotels, apartment hotels, campsites and trendy discotheques, as "Il Pappafico", or pub on the beach, as "Sunset" .
Not to be missed near Marina is the Romanesque
basilica of San Piero a Grado. Tradition has it that the
church was erected on the spot where St Peter landed on his
way to Rome. The remains of the paleochristian basilica are
still visible in the interior, decorated with medieval frescoes
by Deodato Orlandi. |
